How to Keep Your Drains in Great Shape

Clogged drains suck! There’s not much worse for a homeowner than trying to figure out why your water won’t just go where it’s supposed to go.

Did you know that there are things you can do to prevent clogs from happening at your house? You may not be able to prevent every clog, but you can keep your drains in top shape so they work well and keep things flowing for you for a long, long time. These are just a few things you can do to help your home run well.

Use Filters on Your Drains

Put plastic or mesh filters over your drains, especially those in your kitchen sink and any bathtubs or showers. These prevent large chunks of food, small pieces of silverware, and hair from going down your drain. Since all of these things can get stuck in your pipes and cause major clogs, the filters can save you a whole lot of hassle.

Clean Out Your Drains Monthly

Even if you aren’t having any problems, gently cleaning your drains every month or so can prevent the kind of buildup that often results in clogs. Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down each drain to gently break up anything that might be sitting in it. You can also boil several pots of water. Let them cool a bit, then pour them slowly down the drains to dislodge and flush any grease buildup that might be down there.

Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals can clog themselves, or they can cause clogs by failing to do their job well. Either way, regular maintenance will keep things running well. Cut orange peels into small pieces, then send them down the disposal. This can dislodge anything that has gotten stuck in there. Similarly, send some ice cubes down your disposal. These can help keep your disposal blades sharp so they successfully cut up waste and don’t allow it to enter your pipes in large chunks.

Don’t Put Everything Down the Drain

The following things can all harm your drains. Even if you use the garbage disposal, these are more likely to cause clogs and therefore should be disposed of some other way:

  • Coffee grounds. These stick to pipe walls and become sludge that can trap other food and debris.
  • Eggshells. Their edges can catch on other items in your drain and hold them fast, causing clogs.
  • Grease. Like coffee grounds, it becomes thick and sticky and can cause massive clogs.
  • Pasta. This can get thicker and stickier the more water it’s exposed to. It can get so thick that it can’t move or it can trap other things in the drain.
  • Flour. When you mix flour with water, you get a kind of glue. You probably don’t want glue in your drains.
